Holidays in Fredericksburg – A Hill Country Tradition

From late November through the New Year, Fredericksburg transforms into something out of a storybook. Named by Southern Living as one of the best Christmas towns in Texas, this Hill Country gem blends old-world German charm with Texas hospitality—and during the holidays, it sparkles with magic. Twinkling lights line Main Street, shop windows glow with festive displays, and the town square becomes a hub of community cheer. For guests at Walnut Canyon Cabins, it’s the perfect balance: lively energy by day and quiet nights under a starlit sky.

The season begins Thanksgiving week with the lighting of the town’s towering Christmas tree at Marktplatz at 6 p.m. Families gather, children glide across the ice rink, and the aroma of hot cocoa fills the air as everyone counts down to the first glow of the season. Each evening through early January, Fredericksburg’s Christmas Nights of Lights continue the enchantment, with a short audio presentation sharing the town’s German heritage before thousands of bulbs illuminate the square.

On December 5, Main Street comes alive with the Light the Night Christmas Parade, a tradition for more than three decades. Over 150 floats, marching bands, and community groups dazzle spectators, while Santa and Mrs. Claus wave from their sleigh. Festivities continue afterward at Marktplatz with food, music, and photos at Peppermint Platz.

Holiday shopping is equally enchanting. Local boutiques brim with handmade gifts, bakeries tempt with spiced breads and German cookies, and nearby wineries offer seasonal releases. Trade Days at Sunday Farms features over 400 vendors, with extra holiday markets around Thanksgiving and Christmas weekend. Just a short drive away, Luckenbach Texas hosts its 8th annual Bazaar Christmas on December 6, 2025, with arts and crafts, live music, face painting, photos with Santa, and the Christmas tree lighting at 6 p.m.

The season culminates on New Year’s Eve at Luckenbach, where the legendary dance hall welcomes Kin Faux and September Moon for music, dancing, and a midnight champagne toast. Tickets sell out quickly, making early planning essential for this unforgettable celebration.

After a day of festivities, retreat to Walnut Canyon Cabins and sink into the quiet beauty of the Hill Country. Imagine sitting at a glowing firepit with your favorite holiday beverage, the dark sky stretched overhead, bright stars twinkling above, and the gentle hush of the countryside all around. In Fredericksburg, the holidays aren’t just celebrated—they’re truly savored.
