Things to Do in Fredericksburg: Fort Martin Scott & Walnut Canyon Cabins
September is the perfect time to visit Fort Martin Scott, just minutes from downtown Fredericksburg. Step back to 1848 and explore one of Texas’ first frontier forts, once home to the U.S. Army, Texas Rangers, and even briefly the Confederate Army.

Kids will love wandering through replica structures and original historic buildings like the guard house and jail, making history come alive. Recognized as a State Archeological Landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the fort offers an immersive glimpse into frontier life.
Follow the one-mile nature trail along Barons Creek, spotting wildflowers, deer, and birds from the Rotary Club’s bird blind. Imagine being a frontier scout on this mini adventure!
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youth (ages 5–17), and free for children under 5, making it a perfect family-friendly outing. After your adventure, return to Walnut Canyon Cabins to fire up the BBQ grill, cook a delicious dinner, feed the deer with the provided corn, and enjoy a breathtaking Hill Country sunset from your cozy retreat - the perfect way to end a fun day for the whole family.
