Summary
The Old Tunnel State Park is a fascinating historical site located near the accommodation at Walnut Canyon Cabins. This park is the site of an old railroad tunnel that was built in the late 1800s and served as a vital transportation route for the region. The tunnel is no longer in use today, and has become home to millions of Mexican Free-Tail Bats. The bats are incredible to watch during their nightly emergence looking for food and water. It is the smallest State Park in Texas!
Visitors to the Old Tunnel State Park can enjoy an educational presentation regarding the inhabitants of the cave. From May first until October first, about one hour prior to sunset, the park rangers and volunteers put on a presentation regarding the life cycle of a Mexican Free Tail Bat. Learning about the benefits that bats provide for the surrounding area is amazing! The park also offers a hiking trail, picnic areas, and opportunities for birdwatching. A mostly shaded trail, that goes approximately 1.5 miles round trip has many signs identifying the local plants. Your hike must be completed by 5:00 PM.
Staying at Walnut Canyon Cabins provides easy access to the Old Tunnel State Park, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the area's history and natural beauty. Whether you're interested in hiking, birdwatching, or just taking in the sights, a visit to the Old Tunnel State Park is a must during your stay at Walnut Canyon Cabins.
