Altdorf Bieregarten

Hey, if you're looking for a couple of great spots in Fredericksburg to grab some food, drink, and even a little dancing, you’ve got to check out Altdorf Biergarten and Crossroads Saloon & Steakhouse. They’re only about 20 minutes from Walnut Canyon Cabins, so super convenient.

Altdorf is one of those places that’s just oozing history and charm. It’s at 301 West Main, and the building itself is a real treasure. They restored it so beautifully—it even got an award from the Historic Review Board. During renovation of the historic building, a hand-dug well was discovered, and it is fully restored. Pretty cool to look down into history! The mural of the Texas Hill Country by Lee and Matt Casbeer is really stunning! It’s worth stopping by just for those little touches.

Food is the reason Altdorf’s is here, and it’s fantastic. If you’re craving German comfort food, this is the spot. Chef John really nailed it is authentic and hearty in true Bavarian style. Start with the Klopse (German meatballs in a creamy caper sauce). The Bavarian Goulash is hearty, rich, and just what you want on a cool evening. Honestly, everything on the menu is solid.

Now, if you’re up for a little more energy, head next door to Crossroads. First of all, it has the best dance floor (in our humble opinion) in town—perfect for kicking up your boots after dinner. They rotate live music regularly, so there’s always something going on. The food? Chef John’s got that covered too. Start with the brisket-stuffed jalapeños—just enough kick to wake up your taste buds. For mains, you can’t go wrong with a steak (the baseball-cut sirloin is a favorite) or the dry-aged pork chop. They even have seafood options if you’re in the mood for that.

And after dinner? Hit the dance floor! Whether you’re into two-stepping or just want to watch others boot-scootin’, it’s such a fun way to wrap up the night. Definitely check their hours ahead of time, but I promise, you won’t regret it.
